Ryan McFall, computer science professor at Hope College, didn’t want to change his teaching style. He already believed in interactive learning and used many outside elements like Web sites and diagrams to achieve this goal. However, McFall wanted to find a more efficient means of creating these engaging activities. Likewise, he was always looking for new ways to turn students into active learners.
Impressed by the many features in DyKnow Vision, McFall started utilizing the software to compliment his teaching style. Using the Work Groups feature, McFall places students into groups and allows them to work on problems together from their own computers. The Share Control feature allows McFall to give one or more students control of his workspace where they can work on problems in front of the class – all without ever leaving their seats. Using the Polling and Participant Status features in DyKnow Vision, McFall quickly and efficiently assesses student understanding. With this knowledge he knows when it is appropriate to move onto the next topic.
By aiding peer interaction, McFall allows students to learn from each other, creating a community of learners. In addition to achieving his goal of providing students with an active learning environment, McFall has increased his teaching efficiency by storing all of his notes in DyKnow. Overall, McFall’s classroom is an exemplary teaching environment. Using DyKnow, McFall enhances learning for students, while making his time more organized and efficient.
