Educator of the Month: May 2008
Rich McNeil
Joliet Junior College
Rich McNeil is a pioneer in teaching with technology at Joliet Junior College (JJC). His tenacity and passion for engaging students made him aware of the need to provide a learning stimulus that would benefit students of all ages and learning styles. In January, after a year of deploying DyKnow, JJC's subscription license expired and
unfortunately funding was not available to renew the software again.
Students were visibly upset and disappointed to hear about the loss of DyKnow on campus. Wanting to empower his students, McNeil encouraged them to present their
concerns to the Department Chair and President.
To McNeil's surprise, the students heeded his advice and E-mailed the President and Department Chair, as well as created a petition with more than 150 signatures. As a result of
McNeil's encouragement and the college's commitment to their students, the department received immediate funding for DyKnow.
This powerful example of the students' need and preference for the DyKnow software in their learning environment, combined with their desire to influence the direction of their education ultimately provoked the administration to further expand McNeil's technology project, not just maintain it. Today, the students are using DyKnow and, as in the past, their grades positively reflect the benefits of its usage.
