Educator of the Month

Jim Phelan
Choate Rosemary Hall

Jim Phelan's advocacy for the use of technology in education has made him a resource for other faculty at Choate Rosemary Hall.

After attending the DyKnow User Group Meeting last May, Phelan began visualizing how to develop a curriculum based on the software. Throughout the school year, Phelan has used DyKnow Vision’s features to accomplish his teaching goals.

For example, as a math teacher, Phelan knows how imperative it is for his students to see equations as fluid processes rather than static objects on paper. He uses DyKnow’s replay feature to allow for repetitive, concrete demonstration of problems. In his trigonometry courses, Phelan takes quizzes through DyKnow’s panel submission feature to reinforce the previous day’s ideas. He also utilizes the polling feature to gauge student understanding throughout class and believes the collaborative note-taking features help improve student performance.

Phelan has even heard comments like, "For the first time I’m using my notes to study for tests."

Additionally, Phelan believes the ability to access DyKnow notes anytime, anywhere allows him to stay connected to students who can’t physically be in class. As a residential school, it is not uncommon for illness to spread in the closed community. With DyKnow, students can remain in their dorm rooms or the infirmary and still attend classes.

Due to the successful implementation of DyKnow in Phelan’s classes, the school has invited him to conduct DyKnow sessions for the science and math departments. Additionally, the curriculum director has decided to fund Phelan’s participation in a week-long technology development workshop with the goal of educating faculty from other departments on the effective use of technology.
