Department of Engineering Education Associate Professor Tom Walker believes major keys to teaching the Net Generation are hidden in technology.
Walker, who was recently the keynote speaker at the 2008 DyKnow User Group Meeting, addressed the importance of "using the techno-culture to move to more learning and less teaching."
In his speech, Walker addressed the many ways teachers can integrate technology to engage students of the Net Generation. He discussed using Web 2.0 tactics to relate to students, social networking sites as a means to communicating with students and DyKnow as a classroom tool for collaboration. The idea stemmed from his own classroom at Virginia Tech where he is an advocate for the use of Tablet PCs and DyKnow as a "learning space" tool for collaboration.
DyKnow is not the only group taking notice of Walker's use of technology. In acknowledgement of Walker's advocacy for teaching with technology, The Center for Innovation in Learning at Virginia Tech granted him the 2008 XCaliber Award. The recognition is given to faculty who have made outstanding contributions to learning as they develop technology focused courseware.
